The Pima Community College baseball team (2-3-1) split its final two games in the College of Southern Nevada Tournament on Friday as the starting pitching gave up one run in each game.
The Aztecs’ offense set the tone early in its 10-2 win in nine innings over the College of Southern Idaho. Keith Zuniga (Nogales HS) had a great game at the mound pitching seven innings and giving up one earned run off eight hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Pima scored four runs in the 1st inning. Jesus Arvizu (Palo Verde HS) hit an RBI double in the 2nd inning while Cooper Smith (Canyon del Oro HS) and Bryant Muñoz (Tucson Magnet HS) each had an RBI single in the 3rd inning. The Aztecs scored three runs in the 3rd. Arvizu went 3 for 4 with four RBIs in the game and Devon Carrillo (Sahuaro HS) finished scoring two runs.
In the second game, the Aztecs gave up two runs in the bottom half of the 9th inning and lost 3-2. Pima starting pitcher Hyrum Formo (Hayden HS) pitched six innings giving up one earned run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Scotty Watson (Empire HS) took the lost for the Aztecs. Pima got on the board in the 1st inning after Luis Robles (Flowing Wells HS) hit an RBI single to bring around Alec Beyersdorf (Catalina Foothills HS). Beyersdorf went 2 for 3 for the game with an RBI, a double and a walk.
The Aztecs will be back in Las Vegas next week as they play three straight days at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). Their first game will be on Friday against Western Nevada Community College. It will be a single game that will start at 3 p.m.
