Ironwood Ridge High School's girls tennis team began its state tournament run Monday, defeating Rincon in six matches.

The Nighthawks play their next round at home this Wednesday at 3:30 against Glendale Ironwood.

This is the first state tournament for Ironwood Ridge freshmen Marissa Baca, Sara Brown and Emma Bose. "I have a strong belief in our team," said Shannon Contreras, the Nighthawk senior and captain who won her match against Samantha Lund, 6-2, 6-1. "I am very proud of each of them."

Second seed Brown blanked Anik Regan, 6-0, 6-0. "I felt relaxed and came to the net with confidence today," Brown said.

Baca, the undefeated third seat, beat Audrey Young, 6-1, 6-0. "I wanted to start strong today," Baca said. "I felt confident and my strong service game today was a real asset. This was the perfect start for my first state competition."

Bose took command of her match with Amanda Robinson, 6-0, 6-0. "I was so excited to play my in my first state tournament," Bose said. "My first serves were good and my baseline rallies were consistent."

Sophomores McKenzie Grenfell and Alex Prassas both won their matches, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively.
