Tucson Mountains bike tour to honor Schoonover

The 25th Tour of the Tucson Mountains on April 16 will be dedicated to Roy Schoonover, Tucson’s ambassador extraordinaire for the local cycling community.

Since 1986, following a 31-year career with IBM, Schoonover has been opening the eyes and ears of elected officials to the bicycling needs of the community.

A member of the Tucson-Pima County Bicycle Advisory Committee, Schoonover played a critical role in creating, funding and making sure bicycling was represented in the Regional Transportation Authority plan. He continues to crusade for the completion of one of his main projects – Pima County’s Urban Loop – a 55-mile circuit of Tucson connecting all of the linear parks.

Holualoa Companies remains the event’s title sponsor for the sixth year in a row. The tour is presented by Town of Marana and begins and ends at the Marana Town Hall on West Civic Center Drive, off Barnett Road.

Applications can be found in Tail Winds, at local bicycle and running shops or online.  Packet pick-up and last-minute registration will be held at the Tucson Convention Center on Friday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pizza Hut Fun Riders can also register on event day.

For more information, call 745-2033.
