When golfer and stroke are harmonious, it’s sweet music. When an afternoon round helps prep musicians pay for pricey new uniforms, that’s a birdie’s song.
Such is the idea on Saturday, Sept. 13, when the third annual Vanguard Classic Golf Tournament will raise funds for the Ironwood Ridge High School marching band.
Rosa Rhoades, event organizer and band mom, expects 48 players to come to the Sun City Vistoso Golf Course, where registration begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start.
The tournament’s been successful in the last two years, she said, largely due to rosy recollections of woodwinds and brass.
“We’ve found there’s lots of former band members in the community. Many of them have fond memories,” Rhoades said.
Beyond the post-play dinner and Nighthawk jazz band performance that follows, the tournament offers one more perk — organizers plan to sell mulligans to golfers with untuned swings.
“I encourage (players) to bring a lot of cash,” Rhoades said. “That’s not beneath us.”
A few slots for the tournament remain open. Registration costs $75, due by Saturday, Sept. 5.
