This week in sports - NFL suffers loss, NBA injuries and more

NFL

Beloved San Diego Chargers defensive player Junior Seau, 43, was found dead in his home in Oceanside, Calif. last Wednesday. The police have reported the death as a suicide, raising many questions about a players' health after their career. Seau, a former NFL linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins was a part of the 1990’s All-Decade Team. He played 20 seasons in the league, being selected All-Pro 10 times and Pro-Bowl 12. Sadly, Seau joins an unfortunate group of his 1994 San Diego Chargers teammates. That season, the Chargers won the Super Bowl, but have fallen off since. Seau is the eighth member of that team to have died before the age of 45.

NBA

In the NBA, the playoffs are under way and the championship picture has changed drastically. The biggest headline, Chicago Bulls star and point guard Derrick Rose is out for the remainder of the playoffs with a torn ACL. He acquired it with just about a minute left in game one against the Philadelphia 76’ers, in which the Bulls had a comfortable lead.

New York Knicks forward, Amare Stoudemire is missing crucial playing time due to a hand injury sustained after a loss to the Miami Heat. A frustrating injury in every sense of the word as Stoudemire proceeded to punch the glass protecting a fire extinguisher.

Lastly, Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo recently returned from a suspension due to bumping a referee. The Celtics continue to battle the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the playoffs.

NHL

The NHL is in crunch time. Only eight teams remain and they’re all thinking the same thing, winning the Stanley Cup. The hometown, Phoenix Coyotes currently hold on to a slight lead over the Nashville Predators. Meanwhile, Coyotes winger Raffi Torres decided to appeal his 25 game suspension for his hit to the head of Marian Hossa of the Chicago Blackhawks. Torres is facing the longest suspension since 2007.

MBA

Only about two weeks ago, Chicago White Sox pitcher Phillip Humber threw the first perfect game of the year. He was the 21st pitcher ever to reach the remarkable milestone. On the other hand, there is Albert Pujol’s in one of his worse droughts ever. After signing a 10-year, $240 million contract, it’s hard to believe he ever has droughts. Pujol’s has yet to hit a home run this season in his 107 appearances at the plate.

Then, there are those who don’t have the opportunity to throw a perfect game or get into a batting drought. The San Francisco Giant’s third baseman, Pablo Sandoval, has been placed on the disabled list. The broken bone in his left hand is projected to hold him out for 4-6 weeks. This is a brutal injury to the Giants who really don’t have a solid replacement for him.
