In recent contests, Pusch Ridge has rolled past Baboquivari.

In a 70-0 win over the Warriors last week, the Lions finally accomplished something for the first time since all-league quarterback Greg Schimke graduated. They played a good game offensively with almost 200 passing yards.

The Lions are 3-1 before this Friday's 6 p.m. Homecoming contest with San Manuel.

Last Friday's tone was set on the game's first play.

Warrior quarterback Ki-Hod Thomas threw the ball towards a receiver, but Lions linebacker Andrew Gonzales came up quickly and intercepted the ball, returning it 24 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Speed was the name of the game Friday night, as the Lions spent most of the night making Baboquivari look like it was moving in slow motion.

Speedster Tyler Vance looked like he had jets on his feet en route to receiving touchdowns, and also with a 47-yard punt return for a touchdown.

"Our offense started to click," Vance said. He finished with three catches for 145 yards. "Tyler (Goodwillie) was getting time to throw." Goodwillie completed three out of five passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns.

Backup Ryan Genzman also shined, as he completed both of his passes for 42 yards, and ran for a 27-yard gain.

"Our offense was finally functioning," said coach Bob Vance. "If we run the offense right, this is what we can do."

Ironically, the Lions led 14-0, before they even ran an offensive play. The interception and the punt return each came in the first quarter.

When they finally did go on the offensive, Andrew Stanton busted a 22-yard run, and followed with a five-yard run. A few plays later, Goodwillie took off and ran 17 yards for a touchdown. Chad Springetti's conversion made it 21-0.

Stanton finished with 39 yards on five carries. Unfortunately, he had to leave before halftime with an injury.

"Stanton had a stinger," said coach Vance. "He could've been able to come back."

Key linebacker Sam Dunn was also injured in the game with a high ankle sprain. Vance expects him to be able to play this week.

The Lions scored one more time in the first on a one-play scoring drive, a pass from Goodwillie to Vance for a 63-yard touchdown.

Defensively, Gonzales had six assists and an interception, just in the first half. Connor Reilly had a 19-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

"The defense is not as deep (as last year's)," said coach Vance. "But (defensive coordinator Mark) Frithsen always has them ready to go."

The defense has played well for three straight weeks, but next up is a tough challenge. This Friday, the Lions will play their homecoming game against a San Manuel team (2-2) that is averaging nearly 25 points a game. Last year, San Manuel scored 24 points against the Lions.

Game time will be early, at 6 p.m.

"We have to play mistake-free football," said coach Vance. "Next week will be a great test."

"We spoiled their homecoming game last year. I'm sure they'd like to spoil ours."
