The Canyon Del Oro High School track teams ended their 2011 season on a good note, with the girls taking the state championship, and the boys taking second place.

After taking second place in 2009 and 2010, the girls’ team pulled together to win this year’s title. The last time CDO won the title was 2006.

The boys repeated as the second-place finishers.

Going in to the meet, the girls were ranked third in the state, and the boys were ranked sixth. Coach Rick Glider called their finish the best combined results of any school competing in the Division II championships.

The girls’ team was led by star sprinter/hurdler Jaide Stepter, who stuck to her earlier-season promise of competing in as many races as possible. The young star competed in 12 of 17 events, winning three state titles – the 100-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash.

“This stands as the greatest performance by a CDO sprinter at the state meet,” said Glider.

Stepter, a junior, also served as the anchor for the girls’ 1,600-meter relay race, which placed second. She was part of team consisting of Olivia Goff, Brittany Jones and April Steward.

Other medal winners included Rachel Hubbard, who placed second in shot put; Jones, who placed third in long jump; and Steward, who placed fourth in the 800-meter

Steward also teamed up with Abi Bruno, Sarrah Boughan and Taylor Stewart to place fourth in the 3,200-meter relay.

The boys were led by distance star Daniel Wong. Wong won state titles in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. The Arizona State-bound runner ended his high school career with a third-place in the 800-meter run, producing the finest performance ever by a CDO distance runner at the state meet.

Lezo Urreiztieta, also a senior, captured a state title in the 110-meter high hurdles.
