PCC Volleyball Drops First Match in Regionals

The volleyball team (14-13) fell in three sets (25-19, 25-10, 25-22) to Phoenix College, the No. 2 seed, on Thursday in its first match of the Region I, Division II double elimination tournament.

The No. 3 seeded Aztecs will play No. 4 Scottsdale Community College on Friday at 11 a.m. at Glendale Community College. The winner of the match will play at 7 p.m. Friday night. The Aztecs went 1-2 against Scottsdale this season.

In its match against Phoenix College, the Aztecs earned a few ties but couldn’t take the lead in the first set. Phoenix took control down the stretch scoring four straight points which gave them a 23-17 lead. The Aztecs couldn’t recover after falling behind by 13 points early in the second set. Pima fought back in the third set, earning six straight points to take a 12-11 lead and they later had a 16-15 advantage. With the score tied at 22-22, Phoenix went on to score the last three points to take the match.

Kami Humphrey (Canyon del Oro HS) finished the match with 18 assists and five digs. Courtney Pitts (Catalina HS) finished with 11 digs. Rachel Garcia (Cholla HS) contributed with five digs and one ace while Kendra Hall (Empire HS) had five kills.
