This year's Holualoa Companies 24th Tour of the Tucson Mountains attracted 1,160 participants to a Sunday ride around the mountains, and raised nearly $17,000 for a number of causes.

Cyclists started and finished at Marana Town Hall, riding races of 70 and 27 miles.

Richard DeBernardis, founder and executive director of Tour of the Tucson Mountains, said the day began cool, then transitioned into windy but warm conditions.

Clay Murfet from Youngtown, Tasmania, outdistanced defending champion and countryman Jame Carney by one second to claim the individual men's title in a time of 2:45:28. Eighteen-year-old Rene Corella from Tucson out-sprinted Denny Vaughan from Vail for third place in a time of 2:45:38.

Nicette Quintero, from Bend, Ore., placed first among women in a time of 2:46:16, breaking the 2009 course record by 32 seconds. Tucsonan Judy Jenkins was second in 2:55:54, outsprinting Pat Marzi from Kutztown, Pa.

Gerd Pfister and Susana Martinez from El Paso captured the tandem title in 2:46:14 , finishing in the midst of a 50-cyclist peloton.

David Murray of Phoenix, the men's 27-mile defending champion, won for the third year in a row in a time of 1:18:01. Randi Najac from Chandler was awarded the women's 27-mile title, also for the third time, finishing in 1:24:18.0

The Pizza Hut Fun Ride delighted 129 kids and their parents. Four-year-old Olivia Curcuru from Catalina was awarded the unique Tour Conquistador in the Best Decorated Bike Contest during the Performance Bicycle Grand Cycling awards ceremony.

Beneficiaries this year are the University of Arizona Alumni Association, UPH Children's Center at Kino Campus, TMC Children's Miracle Network, Pima Community College Foundation, Community Food Bank and other Perimeter Bicycling charities. Since its inception, El Tour de Tucson Mountains has welcomed more than 21,000 participants and raised more than $311,000.
