As Canyon Del Oro High School’s Dorados attempt a drive toward a repeat bid for the 4A-I title game, sophomore Ka’Deem Carey is taking the scenic route.

Ever the offensive threat, Carey admired the view from the football’s defensive side, recording three solo tackles and an interception during the Dorados’ 49-7 victory over Catalina’s Trojans on Friday.

“It’s very tiring, running both ways all the time,” said a grinning Carey, adding that it took a bit to learn the scheme.

Carey balanced his rushing and secondary duties, steaming for 79 yards on five carries, an average of 15.8 yards per touch. He scored one touchdown and returned a kick for 35 yards as well.

“Next week he’s going to be getting more (offensive) carries, so we’ll see if his conditioning is good enough to go both ways,” CDO head coach Pat Nugent said.

Carey, a freshman phenom when he burst onto the field last season, will need to produce this week against Glendale Cactus, who handed the Dorados their sole 2007 regular-season loss.

“He’s an athlete and we’re trying to put our best 11 on both sides of the ball,” Nugent said.
