The Pima Community College men’s golf team earned a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament in Lubbock, TX on Sunday after the Aztecs took second place in the final round of the Region I, Division I Tournament at the Sidewinder Golf Course in Gold Canyon.

The Aztecs finished with a four-day team score of 1208 as Scottsdale Community College took first place with a score of 1176. Eastern Arizona College finished third at 1216 and Estrella Mountain Community College finished fourth with 1296. The top two teams qualify for Nationals.

The top eight individual finishers received medalist honors. Joseph Courtney was the top finisher for the Aztecs as he completed the final round with a one-over par 72 to earn medalist honors. He finished the tournament in fourth place with a 297 (79-70-76-72) which was eight-strokes behind Scottsdale’s Ben Welle, who won the tournament with a score of 289. Courtney was last year’s Region I, Division I Tournament champion.

“The last two trips to regionals have been great,” Courtney said. “The coaches and players are some of my best friends and it’s great to compete at a level like regionals. At nationals, I’m obviously looking to win it but at the very least for myself and my team to play strong and give us a national title.”

David Chung (Buena HS) also earned medalist honors as he closed out the tournament in seventh place with a score of 301 (80-70-73-78). Austin Stuessel (Ironwood Ridge HS) finished the tournament with a 309 and Landyn Lewis (Tucson Magnet HS) closed it out with a 316.

The NJCAA National Tournament will be at the Rawls Course at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX on May 14-17 (Tuesday-Friday).
