Two local high school students received top honors on Nov. 5 during the 2011 State Championships for Division I Swimming.
Maggie McCord, a Canyon Del Oro senior, won the 50-yard freestyle event, with a time of 23.09 seconds, which also qualified her as an “automatic” All-American.
This qualification guarantees her a spot in the top 100 fastest, 50-yard freestyle swimmers in the country. McCord also placed second in the Division 1 100-yard freestyle event, which qualified her as a “conditional” All-American.
The “conditional” designation means that the athlete must wait until the end of the season, in the spring, to see if their time in a respective event falls within the top 100 high school swimmers in the nation.
Ironwood Ridge High School junior Sara Borendame won the Division 1 1,100-yard breaststroke event. Additionally, Borendame’s time for this event in a preliminary race on Friday, Nov. 4, also qualified her as an “automatic” All-American before her victory on Saturday.
Borendame also received a second medal for taking fourth place in the 200-yard individual medley. The event requires a swimmer to take part in all four technical strokes in a sequence of 50 yards each: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.
