Members of the Pima Community College baseball team visited Thornydale Elementary School on Tuesday for Love of Reading week. Three players visited nine classrooms total to go read to kindergarteners, first and second grade classes.
This was the second straight year sophomores Kyle Becerra (Marcos de Niza HS) and Zach Schira (Marcos de Niza HS) had visited the school during Love of Reading Week and the second visit to the school for sophomore Will Holbrook (Sabino HS) who went in October to listen to the kids read to him.
“Having the opportunity to encourage kids to read through reading them my favorite childhood stories was truly a joy,” Schira said. “I am thankful I was able to be a part of the Love of Reading week for the second year in a row at Thornydale Elementary. It was a great experience.”
Schira said he signed about 25 autographs.
Becerra was happy to get the opportunity to go to read to the kids once again as well and to visit more than one classroom.
“I thought it was really cool that we were able to go to different classrooms this year as opposed to last year where we just stayed in one,” Becerra said. “I had a great time and it was a great experience. The kids were awesome and any time I could give back to the community, it feels great.”
Holbrook said the kids even read back to him and he was impressed with their reading skills.
“I had a blast reading to the kids,” Holbrook said. “My favorite part was how excited the students were to have us read for them. Thornydale Elementary School was a fun place to visit and the first graders as well as the kindergarteners were extremely energetic.”
A few of the books the players read were Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham” and “Are You My Mother,” as well as Curious George books.
