Last week, the Ironwood Ridge High School’s football team received the Army National Guard national ranking trophy during the eighth annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions.
The Nighthawk football team finished first in state and were ranked 110th nationally for its 2012 season.
The California-based company, MaxPreps, ranked more than 16,000 high schools varsity football teams across the nation.
Upon receiving the trophy last week during a pep assembly, head football coach Matt Johnson had only a few words to say.
“Thank you Nighthawks. We love you.”
The Army National Guard also gave the school a banner along with the trophy for its accomplishments.
“For eight years the Army National Guard has recognized nationally ranked football teams for the Army National Guard national ranking trophy,” LTC Christian J. Johnson of the Army National Guard said in a release. “We take great price in doing so because it symbolizes the indomitable spirit common to high school athletes and the U.S. Soldier. It is our honor to share this symbol with the team, coaches, parents, and school. It is an award for the entire community and is much deserved.”
The trophy is given to 50 schools in the country, which are recognized as the finest high school football teams in the county.
