After trailing three games to one in the NLCS (National League Championship Series) to the Saint Louis Cardinals, the San Francisco Giants turned it on and won seven straight games to advance to the World Series and eventually sweep the Detroit Tigers 4-0. Their World Series win made them the best team in baseball two out of the past three years as they brought home the Commissioner’s trophy in 2010 as well.

The Tigers came into the World Series fresh off of a sweep of the New York Yankees, which may have given them just a little too much time to rest. In the meantime, the Giants played seven games in eight days and didn’t drop a beat. In fact, the Giants set records in route to another World Series title.

It began with the incredible start in game one of the World Series in which Giants third baseman, Pablo Sandoval, who went on to win Series MVP, smacked his first three hits out of the park. The stellar play of the Giants continued with strong pitching and solid defense as the Tigers attempted to find their stride.

Games two and three were dominated on the mound by Feliz Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong of the Giants who shut out the Tigers and allowed only seven combined hits.

In the end, not even the triple crown winner, Miguel Cabrera, could match the rampage the Giants went on as he watched the final pitch of the 2012 season whiz by him, earning the final out of the 10-inning game.

The underdog Giants survived six elimination games throughout the post-season. It was that back-to-the-wall mentality that led the Giants to beat the team that had arguably the best pitcher in Justin Verlander, as well as Miguel Cabrera who led the league in batting average, home runs and runs brought in which hadn’t been done since 1967.

The 2012 MLB season was one for the ages and one in which the San Francisco Giants yet again came up on top of the baseball world.
