The high school football season is under way and we already have our standout team, while other teams are still shaking off the cobwebs. For many teams it was evident that it was their first game of their season. From bad passes to penalties, many teams struggled throughout the game. However, the Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks hit the ground running in their 36-0 route of CDO.

It was the Nighthawks running game the proved dominant against the Dorados. After a touchdown by tailback Anthony Braunreiter on the first possession of the game, the Dorodos came back only to fumble the punt setting up another touchdown for the senior tailback. By this point the adrenaline was flowing and the crowd was behind them. The Dorados simply couldn’t find an answer as the Nighthawks scored on their next possession putting them in the lead 20-0.

As the final minutes ticked down on the clock, CDO showed some glimpses of execution almost scoring at the end of the game. The Doroados look to bounce back this Friday against the Mountain View Mountain Lions, while the Nighthawks take on the Marana Tigers.

In a much more contested match-up, the Mountain Lions were able to edge out the Tigers with the final score of 25-17. After a slow start, Mountain View took a 6-0 lead at halftime. The game went back and fourth giving both teams a chance to take over but the Mountain Lions maintained their lead throughout the game to begin their season 1-0.

A tough task was given to the Pusch Ridge Lions as they faced powerhouse Joy Christian from Glendale. Struck with injuries, the Lions took their 38-0 loss as a learning lesson. As many players were either moved up from JV or switched positions filling in for the hurt players, the Lions were forced to make many adjustments.

Pusch Ridge will look to re-cooperate and fix their mistakes as they host Empire on Friday at 7 p.m.
