Three Tucson Padres pitchers combined to shut out the Fresno Grizzlies Tuesday in a 6-0 win at Chukchansi Park. The Padres pitching staff has not allowed a run in 24 of its last 25 innings.
Vince Belnome put the Padres on the scoreboard in the second inning with a RBI double. The hit was the first of three on the night for Belnome. Jedd Gyorko hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to increase Tucson’s lead to 3-0. The home run was his third in the past three games. The next batter, Jesus Merchan, blasted a solo shot out to left field. It marked the fourth set of back-to-back home runs the Padres have hit in 2012.
Grizzlies outfielder Francisco Peguero singled to left field in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 22 games. It is the longest Fresno hitting streak since Jesus Guzman's 29-game hitting streak in 2009. Tucson added two more runs in the top of the eighth when Blake Tekotte hit his seventh home run of the year. Jason Ray closed out the ninth to secure the victory.
Kip Wells picked up his second win for Tucson in relief of Andrew Cashner, who threw two innings in an injury rehab start. Jason Stevenson lost his seventh game for the Grizzlies, allowing seven hits and four runs. The Padres took the five-game series from Fresno 3-2 and the season series 9-7.
