The Tucson Padres are welcoming two local Olympians from the recently concluded Summer Olympics in London to throw out ceremonial first pitches before Thursday’s game against Colorado Springs. Women’s swimmer Alyssa Anderson and Men’s swimmer Clark Burckle are both former University of Arizona swimmers who competed for the United States teams last month.
Anderson earned a gold medal as part of the United States 4x200-meter freestyle relay team. Anderson swam in the preliminary round and qualified the United States for the final, swimming the third leg of the relay. The 16-time All-American during her collegiate career (2008-12) was also a team captain and a recipient of the Ruby Award, given to Arizona’s outstanding female athlete.
Burckle competed in the 200-meter breaststroke in London after qualifying at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials. Burckle has also competed in the World University Games, NCAA Championships, ConocoPhillips National Championships and 2008 United States Olympic Trials. He is from Louisville, Kentucky and swam for the University of Florida before joining the Wildcats in 2010.
Tonight’s game against Colorado Springs (Rockies affiliate) starts at 7:05 pm and is the final Budweiser Thirsty Thursday of the 2012 season. Tickets are available by visiting Kino Stadium, calling (520) 434-1367, or online via www.tucsonpadres.com.
