Tucson 6 Fresno 2 - Monday

WP: Jackson (2-0) LP: Petit (6-6) S: None Time: 2:49 Attn: 4,691

Matt Jackson threw seven shutout innings in the Tucson Padres 6-2 win over the Fresno Grizzlies on Monday at Chukchansi Park. Jackson has yet to allow a run in his two starts in Triple-A.

The Padres scored in the top of the second on Daniel Robertson’s two-out RBI single to right field. Anthony Contreras followed with a single to bring home Jackson and Robertson also scored on the play on a throwing error by Grizzlies center fielder Ryan Lollis. Rocky Gale’s RBI single in the third and back-to-back doubles by Contreras and Merchan in the top of the fourth increased the Padres lead to 5-0. Every Padres batter had at least one hit in Monday’s contest.

The Grizzlies had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, but a barehanded play by Contreras at shortstop and a nice scoop at first base by Sawyer Carroll ended the threat. Tucson added another run to their lead in the top of the eighth when Jedd Gyorko hit a pinch-hit home run. Fresno broke up the Padres shutout with two runs in the ninth inning on three hits.

The win was Jackson’s second in Tucson. He surrendered four hits and struck out four batters in the game. Grizzlies starter Yusmeiro Petit went five innings, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs in his sixth loss of the year. Fresno’s Francisco Peguero’s extended his hitting-streak to 21 games with an infield single in the first inning. He is tied for the third longest streak in the Pacific Coast League this season.
