Iowa 12 Tucson 7 - Tuesday

WP: Hatley (1-0) LP: Werner (1-2) S: None Time: 3:02 Attn: 3,594

The Iowa Cubs came back from a six-run deficit aided by a seven-run fifth inning to defeat the Tucson Padres 12-7 Tuesday at Kino Stadium. The Padres committed four errors in the contest, tying their season high for errors in a game.

The Cubs took an early lead in the top of the first when James Adduci scored on a fielder’s choice. Jesus Merchan tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a RBI double to right field. Merchan later scored on a groundout to first base by Matt Clark giving the Padres a 2-1 lead.

After a 59-minute rain delay, Eddy Rodriguez increased Tucson’s lead to 4-1 with a two-run double in the bottom of the second. Rodriguez again added to the Padres’ score in the bottom of the fourth when he clubbed a solo home run over the left-center field wall. Two more runs came around to score for Tucson in the inning off extra-base hits from Merchan and Andy Parrino.

Iowa answered with seven runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, 8-7. Padres pitcher Andrew Werner had a chance to end the inning with a double play, but made an errant throw into center field allowing the first run to score in the fifth.

Adduci’s sacrifice fly to center field in the sixth inning brought home another run, giving the Cubs a 9-7 advantage. Three more runs came across the plate for Iowa in the seventh on two Padres fielding errors and a wild pitch.

Marcus Hatley earned his first win for Iowa, pitching two innings in relief of Cubs starter Ty’Relle Harris. Werner threw 4.1 innings for Tucson surrendering eight hits and five earned runs. The loss was his second of the year.
