Tucson 14 Albuquerque 11 - Monday

WP: Spence (3-2) LP: Rice (0-3) S: Vincent (1) Time: 3:41 Attn: 8,097

The Tucson Padres scored seven runs in the eighth inning, capped by a Vince Belnome grand slam, to come back and beat the Albuquerque Isotopes, 14-11. The Padres trailed 10-2 in the sixth inning and tied their season mark for largest comeback. The Padres were also down eight runs on April 21 against Salt Lake when they came back to win.

After two early Padres runs, the Isotopes took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when their offense broke out for eight runs. Matt Angle started the scoring when he bunted to Padres’ pitcher Bear Bay, who bumped into third baseman Jedd Gyorko, forcing a bad throw to first base that allowed Tyler Henson to score. The next batter, Elian Herrera tripled to center field to score another run followed by Alex Castellanos with an RBI single. Scott Van Slyke and Federowicz kept the inning rolling with RBI hits of their own to make the score 7-2 Isotopes. Another run would come across on a fielder’s choice and starting pitcher Blake Johnson helped his own cause with a two-run single to give Albuquerque a 10-2 advantage. The eight-run fifth inning tied the Isotopes record for most runs in single inning this season.

The Padres answered back in the top of the sixth with five runs of their own. Nick Hundley got one run back with an RBI single and Jeremy Hermida hit a three-run home run to right center field to make the score 10-6. Andy Parrino’s two-out RBI single to score Belnome brought Tucson within three runs of Albuquerque.

The game was delayed 17 minutes during the bottom of the sixth inning because of a power outage in the light towers at Isotopes Park. After the delay Albuquerque added a run off a sacrifice fly.

The Padres eighth inning comeback started when Isotopes’ reliever Scott Rice walked in three runs with the bases full to bring Tucson within one. After a pitching change, Belnome hit a grand slam to put the Padres on top for good. It was the second time in the contest that the Padres sent ten batters to the plate in an inning.

Josh Spence picked up the win in relief and Nick Vincent closed out the ninth for his first save of the year. Bay went 4.1 innings, surrendering nine hits and six earned runs for Tucson.
