Matt Jackson's first start above the High-A level was a magnificent one, as he pitched five shutout innings in the Padres 3-1 victory over the Las Vegas 51s Wednesday at Cashman Field. The Padres beat the 51s for just the third time in 12 tries this season and won their third game out of their last four in the process.
Neither side scored until the sixth inning, when Las Vegas shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria made two errors leading to two unearned runs. Las Vegas scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an error by Tucson shortstop Beamer Weems. The Padres added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on Sawyer Carroll's RBI single, scoring Anthony Contreras from first base. Contreras was running on the pitch and Carroll's single took Las Vegas right fielder Moises Sierra toward center field. When Sierra's throw was on its way to second base, Tucson manager Terry Kennedy sent Contreras home, who scored without a throw to the plate.
With Brad Brach in the Major Leagues, Erik Hamren took over the closer role and pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fifth save.
