Dave Sappelt’s four RBIs in the final two innings aided the Iowa Cubs to an 8-1 victory over the Tucson Padres Friday at Kino Stadium.
Iowa jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly by Jeff Frazier to score Tony Campana. The Padres had opportunities to score in both the second and third innings, but left the bases loaded each time. Tucson stranded a total of ten runners in the game. Sawyer Carroll tied the score in the bottom of the the fifth with an RBI single to right field.
Sappelt’s RBI groundout in the top of eighth began the scoring in a four-run inning for the Cubs. Iowa had six hits in the frame all coming off Tucson reliever
Chris Franklin. Sappelt added three more runs in the ninth with a home run off the left field foul pole.
Franklin suffered the loss in relief of Colt Hynes. The Padres starter went seven innings, allowing five hits, a walk and one run. Iowa starting pitcher Horacio Ramirez threw six innings surrendering six hits, three walks and one run in his debut for the Cubs.
