In order to serve the greatest number of families in our area, Catalina Community Services hosts, and participates in, the Coalition of Caring Communities. We collaborate with other non-profits and organizations operating holiday family adoption programs to ensure that we are all able to stretch our resources to the best potential - and keep from duplicating services. Each organization takes on a different set of families.

Volunteer: volunteer time and talents are tremendous assets to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. There are many ways in which you can make a difference for the welfare of the animals. Volunteers can "lend a paw" in all of the following areas: Dog walking, cat & dog enrichment, foster care, offsite adoptions, special events, spay/neuter clinic, vaccination clinic, education docent, thrift store, office support.

Five dogs and three puppies are happy to be calling Arizona home after they were rescued in a large-dog fighting raid that took place throughout Missouri, Texas and Kansas.

This is Chato’s story. He was surrendered to Pima Animal Care Center by his owner on April 11, 2013. This dog spent the first two years of his life as a “backyard” dog –never allowed in the house, never socialized, and never treated as a member of a family. However, in spite of all that, he loved and trusted people. He was affectionate, good with people and other dogs. He was placed for adoption on April 12.

It’s easy to get out and explore Arizona on two wheels — our state is renowned for its good weather, new infrastructure and beautiful scenery. Those are just some of the reasons that Arizona is ranked number 10 in the country for bicycle friendliness by the League of American Bicyclists in their annual survey. That’s a jump from number 14 in 2012.

Jose Ocano started this week as the new volunteer coordinator for Pima Animal Care Center. A Tucson native, Ocano started working at Pima Animal Care Center as an animal care technician seven years ago, when he was 18, eventually running the rescue program. After a stint as the volunteer manager for the SPCA shelter in Florida, he returned to be closer to family and to take on this new challenge. We caught up with Jose on his second day on the job.

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) is waiving adoption fees on selected pets through June 30. In an effort to help the 500 animals in its care find loving homes and make space during an unrelenting litter season, the HSSA is drastically reducing adoption fees – to zero!

Dogs, cats, and other animals find their ways to animal shelters in numerous ways. Some have been carelessly abandoned, others have run away from home and are lost, there are those caught up in unfortunate dog fighting rings or hoarding situations. In some cases, authorities step in and the mistreated animals are placed.
