The University of Arizona Eller College of Management's internationally recognized MBA program will be available online beginning this fall. Applications for the program now are being accepted.

"Business schools need to be responsive to the changing needs of their students, and we are committed to offering many modes of graduate business education," said Len Jessup, dean of the Eller College. "Making the MBA program more flexible for highly qualified students is part of our broader effort to expand access to the University of Arizona and will go a long way toward increasing its footprint in Arizona and beyond."

Hope Schau, associate dean of Eller MBA programs, added, "Offering our program in an online format opens it up to a new segment of students. We pride ourselves on meeting the needs of highly qualified students at all stages of their careers, and this new offering reflects that commitment."

With a focus on innovation, application and communication, the Eller MBA experience is designed to give graduates what they need to effectively lead in today's changing global marketplace. Like its full-time, evening and executive MBA formats, the Eller online MBA program is fully accredited by the International Association for Management Education.

    Friday, April 5, 2013 12:09 pm

It happens like clockwork. Every spring, as temperatures rise, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona receives a flood of unwanted and abandoned kittens and puppies. “Litter season” is in full swing and the HSSA reports that it is taking in numerous litters every day. The situation is compounded by the fact that the HSSA has more than 300 animals currently in its care, including many long-term dogs and cats who continue to be overlooked.

To free up limited space for the barrage of youngsters who will soon be available for adoption, the HSSA is offering half-off adoption fees for all cats 5 months and older and all mixed-breed dogs 5 months and older and 25 pounds and over at all locations. As with every animal adopted from the HSSA, each dog and cat will go home microchipped, vaccinated, vetted and spayed or neutered. If you’ve been thinking about welcoming a pet into your family, the HSSA encourages you to find the perfect companion this weekend!

  15. article Grocery magnate Eddie Basha dies at 75

    Wednesday, March 27, 2013 9:53 am

Arizona grocery magnate, education advocate, philanthropist, and one-time gubernatorial candidate Eddie Basha, Jr., passed away Tuesday afternoon.

    He was 75.

In a letter sent to employees, Edward “Trey” Basha III, president and CEO of Bashas’ grocery stores, confirmed his father’s death.

“To us, and to many of you, Eddie was always larger than life,” Edward Basha said. “Eddie never saw himself that way. He considered himself to be a Bashas’ member, no different than any other, and he considered Bashas’ members to be part of his family.”

A cause of death wasn’t immediately released, but representatives of the Basha family said he had been failing in health for some time, The Associated Press reported.

Basha is survived by his wife and six sons.

Basha’s grandfather and father opened the first of what would become the family owned supermarket chain of the same name – Bashas’ – in 1932.

He took over the business in 1968, at age 31, after the death of his father; similarly, Edward Basha III was elevated to president and CEO just this month, and also replaced his father as chairman of the board at the Chandler-based company. Eddie Basha, Jr., was slated to serve as chairman emeritus.

The Basha family has overseen the company’s growth from its first Chandler location more than 80 years ago to what it is today: a 130-plus location company that has weathered multiple economic downshifts and a 2009 bankruptcy reorganization to still stand as one of Arizona’s top truly-local businesses. All but two of the Bashas’ locations are in Arizona, and the company also operates Food City and AJ’s Fine Foods locations throughout the state.

“During Eddie’s lifetime he faced many challenges, the last few years being among the most challenging,” Edward Basha III wrote in the letter to employees. “But his desire to serve the people of the state he loved so well, and to take care of the members that he cared for so much, always gave him strength in the face of adversity.”

Eddie Basha’s voice was easy to pick out on company radio and TV spots, and the family name is as recognizable as ever, thanks to the bold red cursive font on the side of more than 100 stores throughout the state of Arizona.

But the Eddie Basha legacy, in the East Valley and beyond, likely goes well beyond the sale of produce or packaged goods.

"Sad & heartbroken to hear about the passing of Eddie Basha,” posted Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton on Twitter. “Champion for education, best thing we can do to honor him is support our schools.”

In addition to roads named after the family in Chandler, Basha himself – a graduate of Chandler High School – served on the Arizona Board of Education and the Arizona Board of Regents, the governing body for the state’s public universities; the family name is also emblazoned on the side of two schools in the city – Basha Elementary School and Basha High School.

He also unsuccessfully ran for governor in 1994, losing to incumbent Fife Symington.

According to The Associated Press, friends said Basha and his company gave and raised millions of dollars for worthwhile causes around the state for years. He also was known to hand $100 bills out to panhandlers and singlehandedly bailed out countless community-service groups.

Within minutes of news of Basha’s passing breaking early Tuesday evening, “Eddie Basha” became one of Arizona's top five trending topics on Twitter. As former Bashas’ store employees shared their encounters with their former boss, Valley personalities, in addition to Stanton, also took to the short-form social networking site.

“A true inspiration for Chandler and Arizona,” said Chandler city councilman Jeff Weninger.

Added Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was recently hospitalized after falling and injuring his shoulder: “Sad to hear about great Arizonan Eddie Basha. He always thought of others; even reached out to me in recent hospital stay.”

Sen. Jeff Flake followed with “One of Arizona’s finest. He leaves a great legacy.”

Baby in stroller Falls Into Train Tracks Mom Jumps In Before Train Barrels In Caught On Camera read more

Baby in stroller Falls Into Train Tracks Mom Jumps In Before Train Barrels In Caught On Camera. A stroller carrying a 14-month-old girl rolled off a slanted train station platform and fell onto the tracks Wednesday, but the girl's mother leaped onto the tracks to rescue her with the help other passengers, transit officials said."What it looks like to us is that the mother became distracted by something, didn't apply the brake on the stroller and the stroller was able to move off the platform and onto the tracks," said Scott Sauer, director of system safety for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. The accident happened Wednesday afternoon at the 56th Street station of the Market-Frankford Line in west Philadelphia. The platform at the station is slanted slightly for drainage purposes, Sauer said.Surveillance video shows a woman on the eastbound platform with the girl in a jogging stroller, which slowly rolls forward and topples over onto the tracks about 5 feet below. What initially appears to be the girl flying out of the stroller apparently was just a towel or a bag. The stroller comes to rest on the outer rail, which carries no charge. The woman is seen jumping down and lifting the girl to a man waiting on the platform. Other passengers ran to help, and one used an emergency call box to alert SEPTA police, who held an incoming train at the preceding stop. The infant was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment of a cut on her forehead. Sauer said during a news conference that watching the video was "gut-wrenching.""With the stroller moving at such a slow rate of speed, you know, you want to call out to someone, `Hey, the stroller's moving! Somebody grab the stroller,'" Sauer said. He said the line is one of SEPTA's busiest, with trains running every six to 10 minutes. SEPTA police said no charges will be filed but the accident serves as a reminder for other riders to lock stroller brakes when waiting on platforms.
