    Local artist Matthew Moutafis, right, and fire fighters Brian Rinder, left, Darrell Newburn and Jennifer Akins (behind the sculpture), unveil a new sculpture, "Oro Valley Hero" at the Golder Ranch First District's new station at Oracle Road and Linda Vista Boulevard. Moutafis said the child represents Oro Valley, which is growing and youthful, and the fire fighter is here to protect us. He said the work represents the bond between the two.

    Randy Metcalf / The Explorer, Donny Welsh, 8, paints the hands of his life-sized sculpture of himself, which he created over the course of a week, adding up to about 15 hours of work. Welsh even went as far as to take a mold casting of his face for his sculpture. The gallery will hold its next class for kids beginning Aug. 2. The classes run Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    Danielle Carpenter, a sophomore at Mountain View High School who is also enrolled in the Pima County Joint Technological Education District's culinary program, serves mushrooms stuffed with cream cheese, chives, onions and mushroom stems during the facility's grand opening Monday night. The facility, which is located on the Mountain View High School campus, is home to Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education programs.
