Since opening its doors in 2002, the Oro Valley Public Library has been the heart of our community. From unique programs to outstanding customer service, our library is a point of pride. As we approach Jan. 1—the official day that library transitions from affiliate to branch status—I know many people have questions about what this means for our patrons.

During its “Shop Oro Valley” Summer Campaign from June 1 to July 31, 2012, Oro Valley residents and visitors spending $25 or more at an Oro Valley business were eligible to participate in a weekly gift card drawing, sponsored by more than 30 Oro Valley businesses. Thanks to the generosity of our participating businesses, the Town was able to award 50 prizes such as gift cards and free services.

A seat was a tough thing to find at the Oro Valley Council Chambers on Feb. 21 when residents of Oro Valley and Pima County gathered in full for a meeting to discuss the future of the Oro Valley Public Library.

Since its construction in 2002, the Oro Valley Library has
become a focal point of the community. After being open for nearly
a decade, the library has expanded in all aspects, and encompasses
some of the most sought after programs in the region.

The Friends of the Oro Valley Public Library have recognized two
of its volunteers by honoring one as the volunteer of the decade
and the other as the volunteer of the year.

Oro Valley has a new bookshop, being operated as a second
location for the all-volunteer Friends of the Oro Valley Public
Patty Urch, the volunteer manager of Book Shoppe Too, studies a collection of Shakespeare volumes on sale.
Oro Valley Councilman Lou Waters, Vice Mayor Mary Snider, Councilmember Steve Solomon, Friends of the Oro Valley Public Library president Martha Briggs, Councilmember Joe Hornat, library manager Jane Peterson, and director of book operations and Friends board member JoAnn Dumac joined with the library’s many Friends and volunteers at the March 4 ribbon-cutting for Book Shoppe Too.

A long-awaited retail trade analysis of Oro Valley released last
week offered a list of low- to medium-end retailers as the best
possible match for the town's demographics and spending habits. On
the upside, the report also indicated that a proposed shopping mall
at Oracle and Tangerine could generate nearly $1 billion in annual
sales, or potentially $20 million in sales tax revenue.
