Nearly three dozen soon-to-be high school students had a chance to learn from some of Tucson’s best football players while participating in Canyon Del Oro High School’s annual Dorado Camp of Champions.

Sunrise Mountain’s Taylor Nowlin was reliving her last start in ASU’s Farrington Stadium — for two batters, anyway.

The Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks defeated the Canyon Del Oro Dorados 4-0 Wednesday evening at Cherry Field.

The Canyon Del Oro Dorados and Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks will again square off in the Division II state playoffs after breezing past their opponents Tuesday evening.

Earlier in the week, the Canyon Del Oro Dorados laid the foundation for a first-round home playoff game by virtue of beating Salpointe, 4-3, in a tense extra-inning game.

As softball playoffs approach, a similar picture is emerging from last year as Canyon Del Oro and Ironwood Ridge High School continue to compete for the top spot in Division II play.

By the bottom of the third inning, Canyon Del Oro’s Brandon Burke had grown tired of trading runs with the visiting inner-district rival Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks.

To say the Dorados’ bats were hot would be an understatement. The current D-2 state softball titleholder, Canyon Del Oro looked playoff ready as the team knocked in 23 runs en route to a 23-11 victory over the Mountain View Mountain Lions last Thursday.

One of the axioms about baseball is that each day brings on a different game. That showed itself during Canyon Del Oro’s first week of the baseball season.
