While the food at Luke's Italian Beef, 6741 N. Thornydale Road,
doesn't promise to be friendly to the waistline, it does promise to
fill you up, said co-owner Chris Amadori.

December 6, 2006 - It looks as if Chicago's south side baseball
team may be on the verge of packing up its sox and heading out of
town - not from the Windy City, rather the Old Pueblo.

Somewhere in the lonely confines of a rehabilitation room, a stoic Derrick Rose is looking down at a knee brace that is supporting the key to his livelihood. Beneath the brace is the most valuable commodity in the sport of basketball: the knee, and in Rose’s case, it is swollen and tarnished with scar tissue from the stress of surgical repair. It is an imperfect cluster of ligaments, tendons, cartilage and bone that simply refuses to obey its owner’s wishes. The disconcerting thought stirs in the minds of all Chicago Bulls fans that this is supposed to be Rose’s good knee. The other was severely damaged in April of 2012, when the young phenom went down on a no-contact play that had brought a significant tear to his ACL. The melancholy truth is inescapable; Derrick Rose’s body is betraying him at a tragically young age.

Although we are only in the NBA conference semi-finals, it already feels like the finals with tempers flaring, elbows swinging and fines being dished out. Each matchup is different and there is little consistency of play, however there is a pattern emerging in this round of the playoffs.

A long anticipated NBA season has finally tipped off after 149
days of a player lock out. The lockout has created a shortened
season and less time to play all the games, causing teams to have
to play three consecutive nights.

As expected, there was no lack of excitement through the first round of the NBA playoffs. Two series’ being decided in a game seven and a #8 seed upsetting the team with the best record throughout the regular season. In addition, a much anticipated Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers matchup is finally set after the Lakers edged out the Denver Nuggets in a season saving game seven. It’s safe to say that these playoffs won’t disappoint.

As the first round of the NBA playoffs are coming to an end, the picture of who will play in the finals is becoming remarkably clearer. With a few teams dominantly prevailing in the preliminary round, there is no doubt which teams are on a mission and which teams are just fighting to play another day.

In past years, Tucson has played host to the annual spring
training for Major League Baseball. Teams such as the Chicago White
Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies have constantly
been coming here to Tucson for their spring training.

This NBA off-season has been lively and will shape the upcoming season. Superstars have been moved and have joined up with other superstars. Some stars have stayed and others have yet to be moved. While some of the trades were predictable, many were surprising and the result is likely to be an interesting NBA season next year.

I had several political consulting gigs in Illinois during the
‘90s, working for GOP State House candidates and the Illinois
Medical Association. I observed the unique way they conduct
political affairs there. I can’t explain much of it but I can
describe it. Some of my good friends still wear ankle bracelets
from former Governor Ryan’s tenure.

In 1998 NBA Finals, the most monumental athlete in sports history, Michael Jordan, executed a perfect crossover jump shot that sealed his sixth NBA title, and became the perfect send-off for his last ride into the sunset. All that remained were memories, record books rewritten, and an uncertain future over who would carry the torch as the NBA’s new model champion. Jordan’s retirement birthed the rise of a new champion, albeit a different one: The San Antonio Spurs.

In recent years, there have been some really good Oscar hosts like Hugh Jackman, some acceptable hosts like John Stewart, some disappointing hosts like Steve Martin & Alec Baldwin, and some flat-out horrendous hosts like James Franco & Anne Hathaway. Despite the best efforts of some, none have come close to capturing the same wit, timing, and showmanship of reoccurring hosts like Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, or Billy Crystal. At the 85th Annual Academy Awards ceremony however, Seth MacFarlane of “Ted” and “Family Guy” emerged as the single most entertaining first-time Oscar host of the 21st century.

Jan. 4, 2006 - They meandered down the trail, a long line of
horseback riders raising a small cloud of dust barely visible from
the road. Some of the riders had smiles on their faces, while the
wranglers leading the trail ride appeared more subdued, perhaps
even a bit weary, as they came closer to the stopped vehicle at the
entry to the ranch. Instead of waiting to find out how the horses
and novice riders would react to a moving vehicle, the wranglers
stopped the ride and waved the car forward. Once it had passed, the
ride continued toward the corral, the "dudes" unaware of the
concerns of the wranglers. The horses had not reacted adversely to
the running vehicle and none of the guests had ended up on their
butts or heads. It was just another item for guests to add to a
letter home about their day at the White Stallion Ranch - "The ride
was wonderful, and the horses as gentle as could be."
