This ninth installment of the Marvel collection delivers an action-packed, suspense-filled thriller that rivals Stark Industries’ big-screen success in the original ‘Iron Man’ from 2008. The film’s accomplishments result from its combination of staying true to the faith of comic book readers using a diverse cast of characters, as well as, bringing in casual, first-time Avenger audiences with solid acting and twisting plot-lines. Great care was taken to keep the focus of the film on Captain America and those closest to him. This approach really sold the story. Viewers will appreciate the telling of the superhero’s tale on a personal level--which created a new, edgy and exciting Marvel comic book film adventure.

The 2014 NBA Draft class is already drawing talent level comparisons to that 2003, a class that included game changing names such as LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade. The NBA’s incoming talent pool has succeeded in shaking up the college game, as players like Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, Joel Embiid, Julius Randle, and Aaron Gordon have dominated the corridor that leads to the largest stage in basketball. Undisputable as the college talent level may be, one of the most protrusive plot twists entering this season’s draft is that the player with quite possibly the most promise is a prospect that the majority of fans have never heard of.

Two middleweight Mixed Martial Arts kingpins came to blows on Saturday, July 6 at UFC 162. The defending champion, Anderson “The Spider” Silva, entered the Octagon with all the prowess of a god. Nobody had beaten him in seven years. He was unanimously the greatest fighter ever to live. The Brazilian was untouchable, unmatched, and usually had his opponents solved like a puzzle and defeated long before they even realized it. UFC 162’s main event began the same way nearly all of Silva’s entertaining battles have. The Spider toyed with his prey like a cat with a mouse, taunting the young New Jersey born challenger, Chris Weidman. Anderson moved in a way that is unparalleled in the sport, fashioning himself in the likeness of a perfect fusion between Muhammad Ali and Michael Jackson. He danced, he laughed, he poked his chin in the air and dared Weidman to take a swing. The challenger obliged, meeting his mark and landing a blow that caused the Champion to chuckle as if Weidman had just done something cute.

Anybody who owns a television, radio, or has access to the Internet has heard of the Miami Heat. We have stamped nicknames upon them such as “the big 3”, “the Hollywood Heat”, or “the super friends”. We have immortalized their highlights and famous quotes such as “takin’ my talents to South Beach” and the infamous “not 1, not 2, not 3” championship speech. But do we truly understand how they function, what makes them tick, and most importantly, how they can be beaten? The basketball team has become more than a 1990’s-esque dynamic duo, a one man show, or a stacked super star experiment. Team president Pat Riley and underrated Coach Erik Spoelstra have transformed the Heat into a complex organism. The ball club is a riddle that is not easily cracked, but like any sports team, the Heat can be defeated.

Whether you had parents that were distant or parents that were overbearing, we all likely dreamed about running away from home while growing up. These unrealistic fantasies likely involved hitting the road with one or two good friends and building a safe haven somewhere in the wildness. Naturally, we all quickly woke up from this daydream, realizing that we’d never make it on our own. “The Kings of Summer” exists in an offbeat world fueled by our youthful daydreams. The end product is funny and quirky, but also wise and nostalgic with something meaningful to say about coming of age.

The latest addition to the Fast & Furious franchise is just like the tie rods on a ‘72 Buick … no, not really. I don’t pretend to know or care anything about cars unless they have a flux capacitor attached and I couldn’t tell a ‘69 Dodge Charger from a Ford Escort, so I come at the Fast & Furious 6 with an admitted disadvantage. I still had fun watching this film though, but probably not for the same reasons as most of its hardcore fans.

On Feb. 24, millions of television sets across the globe tuned in to one of the most celebrated and glamorous celebrity spectacles of the modern era: The Oscars. Yet, within the aftermath of this 85th Oscar ceremony, it is important to note that all too often viewers are somehow missing the bigger picture. Within the Oscar experience, there is a plethora of trivial and somewhat meaningless aspects of the evening that many people choose to highlight. What designer clothing is Meryl Streep going to wear as she struts down the carpet? Did Robert Downey Jr. have something done to his nose? Did you hear about Jennifer Lawrence’s wardrobe malfunction? It is a melancholy truth that these topics are brought to the forefront of discussion.

This week, instead of a newer DVD, I chose to watch "What's your
Number." Really, none of this week's new releases looked good, and
I was in the mood for an easy movie, and you can't really go wrong
with a chick flick for that.

Should you invest $9.50 to see the romantic comedy “What’s Your
Number?” Nope. Save your money and see a matinee or wait for the
rental. Anna Farris stars in the likeable tale of a woman who fears
she’s slept with an unrespectable number of men. Chris Evans plays
her womanizer neighbor, who helps Farris track down her
ex-boyfriends. The pair are attractive and likeable, but the plot
strains to be believable. There are lots of well-sculpted, naked
behinds on view,so maybe it is worth your time on the big screen.
“Number” is rated R for adult language and nudity.
