The Marana Police Department is proud to announce its upcoming Citizens Police Academy starting Wednesday, January 23rd.

The Marana Police Department is bringing back its Citizens Police Academy this fall.

When Marana became a town in 1977, it drew from the ranks of its 1,500 rural residents to pitch in and create the new community. Old-timers still speak with admiration of the volunteers who stepped forward to run the lumbering road grader over Marana's dirt roads and the folks who donated their time to serve as town clerk.

A light shone one recent Wednesday evening in a conference room at the Marana Municipal Complex.

For most of its 26 years of existence, the Marana Police Department was viewed by many citizens and officers as an insulated culture where citizen involvement with the department was limited. Problems in the department were handled internally, with few people outside the department aware of exactly what was occurring within the MPD.

People interested in participating in Marana’s 2009 Citizen’s Police Academy must apply by Friday, Jan. 16.
