Each ripping open a cardboard box, fifth-graders at Coronado K-8 School excitedly pull out new telescopes – given to them by the Sun City Oro Valley Astronomy Club.

Last week, the Amphitheater and Marana Unified school districts held their annual district-wide spelling bees, each sending four students and an alternate to the Pima County Spelling Bee next month.

Last week, some of the fifth graders at Coronado K-8 School felt like Christmas came early. The Sun City Oro Valley Astronomy Club made it possible for every student in Rose Adamo’s science class to receive a telescope that they could take home.

The Amphi Foundation has been busy at work, and has a lot more to do going forward, as shown in their November update. The Amphi Foundation works closely with each of the schools in the Amphi School District to raise money and provide necessities for students.

SaddleBrooke Community Outreach (SBCO) sponsors tutoring programs in Math and Reading. Helping students be academically successful can be personally rewarding. Currently, SBCO sponsors or supports programs at San Manuel Junior/Senior High School, Mountain Vista Elementary School in Oracle, Coronado K-8 School (just south of Catalina) and Ironwood Ridge High School (Oro Valley).

Students at Coronado K-8 School are coming together for a common
cause, to help their classmate Nic Stogner.
What started as a classroom project at Coronado K-8 School has
turned into a schoolwide initiative to raise awareness for cystic
fibrosis. Eighth-grader Nic Stogner has the disease, and now a
variety of fundraisers have been planned to raise money to donate
Nic Stogner, an eighth-grader at Coronado K-8 School, and his
teacher, Aimee Finkelstein, have grown closer this year after the
instructor took an active interest in Nic’s condition. Nic, 14, was
diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 7.

Carla and Robert Springer are the recipients of the 2011 Arizona
Education Association’s Partners in Education Award. The award
honors those who support neighborhood schools. Recipients include
corporations, local businesses, individuals or community groups
that exhibit exemplary support for local public schools. Only one
such award is given each year for the entire state.
