It was a capacity crowd on March 21 as the Los Angeles Dodgers took on the Chicago Cubs in the final of two spring training games to come to Tucson’s Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium this year.

The Tucson Padres and the Pima County Sports & Tourism Authority have announced the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres will play a split-squad Spring Training game at Kino Stadium on Sunday, March 17 at 1:05 pm. The game pairs the Tucson Padres Major League affiliate against the Major League team closest to Tucson. Both teams have a second Spring Training game that day in the Phoenix area.

Gov. Jan Brewer named Shaun Rieve as the new Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs. Mr. Rieve replaces Lorna Romero, who was appointed Director of Legislative Affairs in November.

The Tucson Padres have announced their home dates for the 2013 season at Kino Stadium. The 72 game home schedule starts Friday, April 12 against the San Francisco Giants Triple-A affiliate, the Fresno Grizzlies. The opening homestand continues through Friday, April 19 when the Padres host the Salt Lake Bees, the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners met at the Kino Sports Complex on March 16, marking the first of  three spring training games to be played at the stadium this year. On Friday, March 23, the Chicago White Sox will square off against the Los Angeles Dodgers, with the proceeds of the game going toward the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation.

At Rincon High last Friday, the Rangers’ Andrew Petty struck out 14 batters. He was throwing so hard that radar guns had him touching 90 miles an hour in the first inning.

In past years, Tucson has played host to the annual spring training for Major League Baseball. Teams such as the Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies have constantly been coming here to Tucson for their spring training.

All eyes were on the players but the spectators’ hearts were with a little girl who loved baseball. On Monday afternoon, about 7,400 people attended a special spring training game at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in support of the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Fund. Green was the 9-year-old killed during the Jan. 8 shootings that took the lives of six people and injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, among others. It was one of several events being held this week in support of the shooting victims and their families.

In preparations for their first season, the Tucson Padres, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, have announced their front office staff. Baseball front office veterans, new additions and former athletes have joined the roster.
