Pima Community College’s Fashion Design students are hosting a fairy tale fashion show that will take you on a journey through the stitches in time.

This article is in reply to a recent Special to The Explorer written by Jo Holt published in the Feb. 20 issue of the paper. Because Arizona has had two balanced General Fund budgets in a row, our state is ranked number one in the nation for business startups.  We went from 46th to number four in private sector job creation. We are 10th in overall great business climate compared to California which is ranked 50th.  During the past four-year recessionary period, we never let K-12 public school per pupil funding go below $9,000 (federal, state plus local funding). We mortgaged the Senate, House and Executive buildings in order to protect K-12 education funding. The north side of Tucson has four outstanding public school districts in Catalina Foothills, Amphi, Marana and Flowing Wells. We have more charter schools per capita and more school choice than any state. We have open enrollment between public school districts, tuition tax credits and a great home school program.

The Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission will host a debate for House of Representative and Senate candidates in Legislative District 9 at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4. The debate will be at the Pima Community College Downtown Campus located at 1255 N. Stone Avenue in Tucson.    

So far in 2012, there have been three teachers arrested in the Tucson region for sexual misconduct with minors/students. Two of those teachers are from the Amphitheater School District, and one from Flowing Wells for alleged relations with a student in the Tucson Unified School District. While the details of each case are bad enough, the sad part of the news is that people are becoming used to it. It’s getting to a point where a teacher having sex with a student isn’t as shocking as it once was.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department Crimes Against Children Unit became aware that a teacher from the Flowing Wells School District was possibly engaging in sexual conduct with a minor.

Three Northwest school districts are keeping an eye on Arizona statehouse legislation that, if signed by Governor Jan Brewer, would assess criminal penalties for anyone using an electronic or digital device to harass, intimidate or threaten another person.

The explosion in popularity of communication technology and its ease of use has spawned an unintended consequence — cyberbullying — a form of bullying so insidious that President Obama this month hosted a conference on teenage bullying, with cyberbullying taking a prominent part.

Lend a book to a student, they’ll read for a day. Let them keep the book and they’ll read it for a lifetime. At least that is the hope with the students at J. Robert Hendricks Elementary School.
