Winning the Cowboy up Baseball Invitational earlier in the year, and defeating rival Canyon Del Oro, 18-6, seemed like good building blocks for the Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks baseball team (8-2) in their quest to go deep into the 2013 playoffs.

“Killing Them Softly” is about as far away from a feel-good movie that you’ll likely get this year. Relentlessly violent and candidly cynical in tone, this is easily among the angriest cinematic representations of 21st century America. But beyond its precipitous bleakness, does the film at least leave us with an encouraging, hopeful message? Nope, there’s no light at the end of this tunnel here. It’s just utter darkness from start to finish.

CDO won the East Valley Shoot Out at Bear Creek Golf Course in Chandler after posting a team score of nine-under par (419). CDO led second place Chandler Hamilton High School by three shots, two-under par to one-over par, after the first day of competition.

Canyon Del Oro participated in the Dobson Ranch Invitational on Oct. 5-6, placing fourth as a team against 21 other schools from Division I and II.

The Canyon Del Oro boys’ golf team looks to have another promising year ahead. The talent-packed team, led by Jaime Waltmire, has started the season out strong, commencing with a solid showing in Division II play at the Alta Mesa Golf Cup, which ran from Aug. 24-25.
