Vote totals for races and ballot questions of interest to Northwest readers

The City of Tucson will have a mayoral race after all, now that write-in candidate Rick Grinnell received enough Republican votes in the Aug. 30 primary election to move on to the general election.

With the Primary Election over, many races will start gaining more attention as candidates focus on the Nov. 6 General Election where more than just the U.S. President will be decided.

For the first time in Oro Valley’s history, there is no need for a General Election.

Dec. 1, 2004 - Even the javelinas that have their acorn dinner at town hall most evenings go home before the members of the Oro Valley General Plan Revisions Committee members on what have been described as marathon meeting nights.

Oro Valley residents will cast one of their most important votes ever Nov. 4 when they decide whether to pass or reject a proposed General Plan update that will help determine how the town grows during the next 20 years.

Marana voters approved both questions on the General Election ballot Tuesday.

Faced with the impossible task of endorsing a new General Plan in time to present it to voters in May, the Oro Valley Town Council is now on a course that would delay a General Plan election for another six months.

On Tuesday, May 17, Marana residents will be voting on the General Plan, and a proposal to renew the town's Trico Electric Cooperative, Inc. franchise agreement.

The Marana Chamber of Commerce has elected its board of directors for the 2008-09 fiscal year.

The five major executive branch offices in Arizona are governor, secretary of state, attorney general, treasurer and superintendent of public instruction. The following are overviews of the candidates in the Sept. 10 primary election races. Uncontested major and third party candidates will automatically advance to the general election Nov. 5. The Northwest EXPLORER will provide more information about their campaigns in our October general election coverage.

Waiting for Tuesday's results, I dropped in on an old friend who's one of the leading Democrat political consultants to compare generalizations. I won't embarrass him by name. One thing we both note is the level of nastiness and intolerance is much higher than ever.

Why is there a General Plan? 

Nov. 16, 2005 - Oro Valley voters approved the town's revised general plan in the Nov. 8 election. Preliminary results show that the plan was approved by a margin of 77 percent to 23 percent.

No better understanding of a fast-growing town's struggle to shape its future can be had than to follow its residents as they go about revising a General Plan.

June 22, 2005 - While there are some decisions to be made before a final budget is adopted, the Oro Valley council has capped the town's spending for 2005-06 at $99 million.

Contending one and maybe two congressional races were stolen from them, Republican legislators have approved a measure to finesse election laws to keep out the Libertarians who they say are taking votes from their candidates.

Marana residents have received their mail-in ballots, and the polls will be open May 17. While our town council elections were decided in March, there are still a couple of important matters to decide in this month’s General Election: Marana’s 2010 General Plan update and Trico Electric Cooperative’s franchise agreement with the town.

Oro Valley Town Council members named Councilman K.C. Carter vice mayor at last Wednesday’s meeting.

Ballots are still being counted in the Oro Valley Town Council Primary Election. 

On Sunday, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords announced she will resign from her District 8 seat in order to allow more time to recover from a gunshot wound to the head she suffered on Jan. 8, 2011.

Next week, Oro Valley residents will begin receiving ballots in the mail where they will be asked to choose between six candidates running for Town Council.
