Oro Valley resident and Four-Star General John Wickham recalls returning home from the Vietnam War after being almost mortally wounded during combat. A well-dressed, middle-aged woman walked up to him at Grand Central Station. She didn’t shake his hand or offer a thank you. Instead, she spit in his face and called him, as he puts it, “some of the foulest names you can imagine.” That was the mentality of many American citizens toward soldiers during the Vietnam War.

“The awards don’t mean that much. What’s really the most important thing in my life, looking back on it, was an opportunity to serve America, its families, and its youth, and to make a difference with my life.”
General John Wickham, seen here in 1979, was nearly killed in combat after his firebase was attacked in Vietnam. He was read his last rights after an explosion and several bullet wounds caused him to lose more than ten pints of blood.
General John Wickham’s awards are numerous, including a purple heart he was awarded after nearly losing his life in battle.
General John Wickham served in the Army for 37 years. He capped his career off by serving as Chief of Staff of the Army under President Ronald Reagan before retiring in 1987. Wickham now lives in Oro Valley.

a positive experience. They learn technical trades, build character
and relationships, and protect the freedom of a nation. The hard
work put forth each day is made worthwhile when the public in which
they serve demonstrates its gratitude.
