There is good news and bad news about growing herbs in Tucson.
The good news is that we can grow herbs all year. The bad news is
that they may not be our favorite herbs. As the days heat up,
remove winter favorites and plant summer herbs. There are also many
year-round herbs great in the landscape.

For Father’s Day 2003, I mentioned some landscape herbs you
could give the Dad that likes to cook. I did get several reader
calls on that one, so I thought perhaps I ought to revisit and
expand on the topic, since there are a number of low-water herbs

One of the many things I love about autumn in the Old Pueblo is
that it's time to plant some really cool, cool climate herbs. Like
dill. And also calendula, caraway, chives, cilantro, coriander,
fennel, feverfew, German chamomile, parsley, and salad burnet.
These are grown as annual plants in our area. They thrive all
winter, ripe for the plucking, then pass into the compost heap in
the sky when the weather warms up.

Interested in trying your green thumb at heirloom herbs and produce, but not sure how to beat Tucson’s heat and succeed with your seedlings? It can be done—heirloom gardeners in your neighborhood are enjoying the fruits of their labors (literally) year-round. For starters, you can plant your winter vegetables—heirloom or others—in September to reap a good harvest. Our summer gardening season starts in March.
The Eggs Benedict Montreal at Izzi’s Café features smoked salmon and two poached eggs served on toasted buttermilk biscuits and topped with fresh red onions, herbed cream cheese and a dill-caper hollandaise sauce. It comes with a choice of hash browns, o’brien potatoes, sliced tomatoes or fruit.
Randy Metcalf / The Explorer, Landowner Pak Chan expresses his opposition to the Marana Regional Landfill proposal, while council members Patti Comerford and Carol McGorray flank Mayor Ed Honea in listening. The empty chair is that of Vice Mayor Herb Kai, who owns the piece of ground in west Marana where the landfill would be built, and who has recused himself from consideration of the subject.
