Following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, three specially trained firefighters from the Northwest Fire District’s Wildland Division will offer recovery services along the east coast, beginning in New Jersey.

Northwest Fire District’s Ironwood Hotshot crew, consisting of about 20 firefighters, has returned to Tucson after being dispatched to help subdue the Waldo Fire in Colorado and Grapevine Fire at Mt. Graham in Safford.

walking through Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport in 2006
when the bright yellow shirts in which they were all clad caught
her eye. But it was the vibe they cast that drew her in.

The Ironwood Hotshots spent last Friday in Northwest Tucson
prepping their gear before heading to the Monument fire, which is
burning in southern Arizona in the Coronado National Forest.
Ironwood Hotshot firefighter Anthony Lopez replaces the chain on a chainsaw last week. The crack firefighting team were in Tucson for a short time between fighting a fire in Carlsbad, NM, and heading to the Monument Fire near Sierra Vista.
During a break between fires around the country, Leilani Robinson’s files the tips of her ax last week at a Northwest Fire District’s Wildland Operations Center. This is Robinson’s first year serving as an Ironwood Hotshot firefighter.

As the flames spread, the clumps of brown grass withered into
slick, black mounds. Several mesquite trees, which seemed to
withstand the blaze, cut ominous shapes in the thick smoke.
