During the annual State of the Town Address on April 26, Marana Mayor Ed Honea said Marana will continue to stay true to its core mission, which is devoted to strong public infrastructure, public safety and public services.

After a March election that demonstrated overwhelming support for a town-owned wastewater treatment facility, members of the Marana Citizen’s Forum are looking at the next logical step forward for this session’s topic – the development of North Marana.

 The Marana Unified School District announces the selection of Denise Coronado as principal at MCAT High School.

Members of the Marana Citizens’ Forum have chosen planning for growth in North Marana as their topic this session. The group started meeting last week and will conclude its discussions in early June.

Delta Kappa Gamma is an international organization of women educators whose purpose is to promote the professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. Aligned with that purpose, Delta Kappa Gamma/Alpha Chapter will host their first annual “Early Career Educator” appreciation and recognition brunch recognizing 16 outstanding early career educators from the Marana Unified School District. The brunch will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.

Tortolita Middle School will celebrate the school’s 30th anniversary during a special celebration on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 9:00 a.m.

As the deadline passed for the nation’s across-the-board budget cuts known as sequestration, the failure of Democrats and Republicans to strike a deal before March 1 now means $85 billion will be reduced from government programs and federal agencies over the next 10 months, the consequences of which could also be felt locally, though likely not immediately. 

There was an abundance of support demonstrated at the Marana Run/Walk 2013 Family Wellness Fair on Saturday, March 2, when more than 400 runners and a number of sponsoring vendors arrived to raise awareness about fitness and the increasing problem of childhood obesity. 

Applications are now being accepted for the annual Dove Mountain Rotary Scholarships for graduating seniors in the Marana Unified School District.

The Arizona Athletic Trainer's Association recently announced the selection of Leah Oliver, of Mountain View High School, for the Hall of Fame.

The Marana Unified School District announced the selection of Pamela Beine as assistant superintendent for the district.   

Last week, the Amphitheater and Marana Unified school districts held their annual district-wide spelling bees, each sending four students and an alternate to the Pima County Spelling Bee next month.

Earlier this month, two schools within the Marana Unified School District and one within the Amphitheater School District were recognized by the National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) as 2012 NCEA Arizona higher Performing Schools.

Marana Middle School teacher, Lynn Mitts, is the Arizona Science Teachers Association (ASTA) New Science Teacher of the Year for 2012.

Parents and students of Butterfield Elementary School are invited to participate in a special event titled “Math Games Night” on Tuesday, December 4 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. as part of the school’s commitment to keep students engaged and excited about math.
