    Photo courtesy of the Town of Oro Valley, Officer Elijah Woodward of the Oro Valley Police Department played the National Anthem on the pipes Friday, when Oro Valley employees, residents and the families of Maria Zabaleta and Sgt. Doug Reedy paused for a memorial tree-planting ceremony. Trees were unveiled on the town campus along La Cañada. Zabaleta and Reedy were town employees who have passed away in recent months.

    The park was named after their 9-year-old daughter, who was killed on Jan. 8. More than 200 people attended the ribbon-cutting and released pink and purple balloons at the end of the ceremony. In attendance were shooting survivors, local dignitaries, Christina’s classmates, representatives from Gabrielle Giffords’ office, and first responders.

    Randy Metcalf/The Explorer, World War II vet Dave Meyer recalls: "These commando pilots are flying us and one turns around and says, 'We're about to run out of gas.' He says, 'You better hook up to your parachutes. We're gonna jump.' I said to myself 'We’re gonna jump?!' Then he changed his mind and says, 'Nope, we're gonna try and land.' Then we ran out of gas right as we were landing."

    Randy Metcalf/The Explorer, World War II vet Don Crabtree said: "I saw combat before I was 19 years old. I saw it in Guadalcanal. I guess that's one of the reasons I joined the service — my dad always talked about action but he never saw any. The only action he saw was guard duty."
