    It’s 7 a.m., and the sun peeks over the eastern mountains. Dogs bark with excitement, and the jingle of chains can be heard throughout the brisk morning air at the Lazy K Ranch, home of Big Sky Rides.

    The Marana Police Department unveiled its new equestrian patrol Oct. 17. The three horses and two officers that constitute the mounted unit will be used primarily to patrol the 2,440 acres of the Tortolita Preserve northwest of Tangerine Road and Interstate 10, as well as Marana's Santa Cruz River Trail. Above, Mounted Patrol Officers Debra Kesterson, on Joker, and Dan Sample, on Justice, showed off their mounts to Tucson media Oct. 17.
