    Wednesday, June 19, 2013 4:00 am

There’s no denying that Richard Donner set the bar for the Superman franchise with his 1978 film. The icy landscapes of Planet Krypton, John Williams’ vigorous musical score, Christopher Reeve’s iconic performance - every aspect of Donner’s movie remains definitive.

  6. article Guest Column: A message on the privacy debate

    Wednesday, June 19, 2013 4:00 am

The country is having an important debate about how much of our personal information the government should collect. The privacy issue is making for strange political bedfellows, with people on the left and right staking out a wide range of positions. But regardless of political stripe, we all should be able to agree that no one should be gathering private and personal information about our children to put onto one gigantic national database, right?

    Tuesday, June 18, 2013 5:00 pm

(BPT) - Have you ever gone to fill a prescription and the pharmacist asks if you’d like the generic version of the medication, perhaps reminding you that it is at a considerable cost savings over the brand-named drug? Or you’re told that your insurance will only cover the generic equivalent of what your doctor has prescribed?

  12. article Review: Man of Steel – Up, Up, and awry

    Friday, June 14, 2013 11:30 am

I love the character of Superman, and although he may not be my favorite comic-book hero I still admire what he symbolizes and his rich pop culture history. So needless to say, I had very lofty expectations for Man of Steel, the latest movie redux of the Superman mythos. Unfortunately, my dreams of an exciting reboot of the film franchise, one that might potentially lead to aJustice League movie, have been laid lower than an ant in the miniature city of Kandor.

    Wednesday, June 12, 2013 5:00 pm

(BPT) - Whether it’s plywood, bottled water or generators, Americans gather the necessary supplies and seek the appropriate shelter if confronted by the wrath of Mother Nature. Regardless of the disaster – hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires – lives can be turned upside-down in an instant. Some of the most commonly overlooked items, as people stock up for emergencies, are prescription medications. In some cases, not having access to necessary medication can itself be a life-threatening situation.

  19. article Primetime Review: Christopher Nolan’s artistic vision

    Wednesday, June 12, 2013 4:00 am

At what point can we safely say that a filmmaker has cemented himself as a true mover and shaker in the industry? Probably around the time when multi -billion dollar production companies begin trading ownership of entire franchises like two boys swapping baseball cards, in order to obtain rights to co-produce his work. This is where Christopher Nolan’s career has taken him. Once it became clear that Nolan’s newest cerebral project, Interstellar, would be produced by Paramount rather than Warner Bros., the latter felt it best to place a few of its cards on the table in order to obtain a piece of Nolan the cash cow. Paramount named its price of allowing Warner Bros. to co-produce the upcoming film, and it was exclusive rights to produce a sequel to 2009’s Friday the 13th, as well as a new Southpark film.

  20. article Review: ‘The Kings of Summer’

    Wednesday, June 12, 2013 4:00 am

Whether you had parents that were distant or parents that were overbearing, we all likely dreamed about running away from home while growing up. These unrealistic fantasies likely involved hitting the road with one or two good friends and building a safe haven somewhere in the wildness. Naturally, we all quickly woke up from this daydream, realizing that we’d never make it on our own. “The Kings of Summer” exists in an offbeat world fueled by our youthful daydreams. The end product is funny and quirky, but also wise and nostalgic with something meaningful to say about coming of age.

  23. article Such the Spot - A personal plea for water safety awareness

    Monday, June 10, 2013 8:54 am

This time of year gets to me. When the mercury climbs and the sun won’t relent, my mind goes back. It was on a midsummer day nearly four years ago that my then two-year-old son nearly drowned. I took my four children to a friend’s house to spend an afternoon cooling off in their pool. My friend and I sat in the shallow end of her pool keeping watch as our combined six children splashed and swam the day away. My two-year-old stayed at my side on the pool’s lagoon, spraying the other kids with a stream from a water gun he’d taken a liking to.
