The latest addition to the Fast & Furious franchise is just like the tie rods on a ‘72 Buick … no, not really. I don’t pretend to know or care anything about cars unless they have a flux capacitor attached and I couldn’t tell a ‘69 Dodge Charger from a Ford Escort, so I come at the Fast & Furious 6 with an admitted disadvantage. I still had fun watching this film though, but probably not for the same reasons as most of its hardcore fans.

On Sunday night a Papa John's customer in Sanford, Fla. checked his voicemail and heard a message from the driver who had just delivered his pizza. Not knowing he'd accidentally called the customer, who is black, the driver used racist terms to bad-mouth the customer and his wife to a co-worker. A keen bigot with a fondness for opera, the driver then launched into a musical number, replacing the lyrics of the "The Marriage of Figaro" overture with racial slurs. The customer posted a video of the voicemail online and Papa John's CEO John Schnatter has since offered a "heartfelt apology" on Facebook. The driver and his co-worker have been fired. - MSN.com

After “A Walk to Remember,” “The Notebook,” “The Last Song,” “The Lucky One,” and “Dear John,” Nicholas Sparks is obviously running a campaign to become president of sappiness. His novels have inspired a number of hokey adaptations chock-full of one-dimensional archetypes and scenes ripped off from other romances. This guy loves seeing people get caught in the rain more than Michael Bay marvels at the sight of explosions. The latest picture from the novelist turned producer, “Safe Haven,” is every bit as cheesy and mushy as one would expect. It’s about as original as a Lifetime movie designed to brazenly manipulate our emotions. Maybe I’m becoming easier to manipulate, but this melodramatic cornball kept me completely invested from beginning to end.

Pima Community College Music presents a concert featuring vocal music faculty Jonathan Ng, tenor. The program features art songs by Beethoven, “Bel Canto” repertoire from Handel’s oratorios and operas, and music by Renaissance composers performed by male quartet. Joining Dr. Ng, countertenor, in the male quartet are Jose “Chach” Snook, countertenor; Stephen Warner, tenor; and Darryl King, bass. The recital also includes performers Krista Flora, soprano, and Suzanne Eanes, pianist.

In what’s been an otherwise tremendous year for movies, 2012 still brought us quite a few stinkers nevertheless. One general question film critics are asked is how they feel when ripping a movie apart. It may sound mean-spirited and arrogant to criticize a movie that a lot of people invested their time and money into. Growing up as an only child in a musical family, Michael Veres knew Beethoven and Bach before he happened on to Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd.  His father is a retired Orchestra Director, Laslo Veres, and his mother a former singer with the Tucson Opera Company; now a voice teacher.  One would think that Michael’s passion would be in performing arts, but instead he loves to cook and started doing so as a child.
