  3. article 3-year-old succumbs from injuries after water-related incident

    Northwest Fire District firefighters and paramedics were called to the 8200 block of North Equator Loop just before midnight after receiving a 9-1-1 call indicating that a small child had been found in the backyard swimming pool. The home is near Cortaro Farms and Oldfather Roads. The initial 9-1-1 call was received at 11:43pm. Bystanders reported that the child was pulled from the pool where CPR instructions were given from 9-1-1 dispatchers until Northwest Fire crews arrived 4 minutes later.

  10. article Child dies eight days after being strangled by mother

    On Jan. 30 at 10:10 a.m., officers from Operations Division Midtown responded to the 2700 block of North Swan Road regarding a 911 call from a female who advised she had just strangled her 10-year-old son. Upon arrival, officers located the boy inside the residence suffering from serious signs of trauma. Officers immediately began emergency first aid on the child until personnel from the Tucson Fire Department arrived to assist. The boy’s mother was taken into custody inside the residence without incident. The child was transported to a local area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

  14. article Teenage driver killed in early morning rollover

    Sunday, January 20, 2013 12:45 pm

    Early Sunday morning at 12:24 a.m Pima County Sheriff’s Department received reports of a vehicle rollover at Artesiano Road and Ina Road. When deputies arrived on the scene, they discovered a 4-door sedan on its roof with three teenage female occupants trapped inside.

    Northwest Fire responded to help extract the passengers and transported two 16-year-old females to University Medical Center with minor injuries.

    The driver, 16-year-old Julia Ann Good was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained.

    Pima County Sheriff's investigators from their Traffic Unit responded. They determined that the passenger car was driving too fast through dips on Ina Road west of Wade Road, causing them to lose control and roll over.

    It was reported that all the vehicle occupants were all wearing their seat belts and alcohol did not seem to be a factor.

    The accident is still under investigation.

  20. article Sheriff's deputy find stabbing victim during DUI checkpoint

    On Dec. 8, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint at Palo Verde Road and Aviation Parkway as part of the holiday season DUI enforcement efforts. At approximately 10:30 p.m., a white pickup truck came through the checkpoint and deputies immediately noticed a large amount of blood on the driver’s side door. Inside the vehicle were the female driver, later identified as 42-year-old Rebecca M. Gomez, the 57-year-old male passenger and two female teenagers, none of whom was wearing a seatbelt.

    The Metropolitan Pima Alliance presented Pima County a Common Ground Award for The Loop and Share Use Path Extension and Underpass at Cortaro Road. The underpass provides easy off-street access to Wade McLean Park and El Rio Park in Marana. The County received the award in the Public Works category.

  22. article Burglary arrest made in officer-related shooting

    On the evening of November 19, 2012, personnel from the Tucson Police Department served a search warrant at the Randolph Park Hotel located at 102 North Alvernon Way. During the course of the investigation surrounding the burglary incidents at the residence on East Elmwood and the shooting of Sergeant Robert Carpenter, information was developed regarding a person of interest related to the burglary cases. He was identified as Richard “Ricky” Mendoza Jr., 29 years old. Investigators learned that he was staying at the hotel on the evening of November 19, 2012. As such, various investigative, patrol, and SWAT resources responded to the area in order to locate and detain Mr. Mendoza. In addition, they obtained and served a search warrant for the room that he was staying in as well as vehicles associated to him that were in the parking lot of the hotel. As the investigation continued, detectives were able to definitively confirm Mr. Mendoza’s involvement in both of the burglary incidents that occurred at the residence. Mr. Mendoza was also determined to be the male that was wearing the dark blue jersey and seen fleeing on foot from the residence after the first burglary incident. He was arrested for 2 counts of First Degree Burglary, 1 count of Second Degree Burglary, and 6 counts of Prohibited Possessor, all felony offenses. Mr. Mendoza was transported and booked into the Pima County Jail. His booking photograph is included below. The investigation regarding the shooting of Sergeant Carpenter continues, and additional updates will be released once information becomes available.

  23. article Deputy claims self defense in shooting, suspect killed

    On Friday, Nov. 16, at approximately 5:21 p.m., Deputy Nicholas Norris with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Foothills District conducted a traffic stop on a four door sedan in the area of Oracle Road and Prince Road. Both vehicles were stopped in a business parking lot in the northeast quadrant of the intersection.

  25. article Baby left at apartment complex

    On the evening of Oct. 2, the Tucson Police Department responded to an apartment complex located in the 200 Block of East Prince Road after a 911 call was received, indicating that an infant had been found at that location. Officers from Operations Division West as well as detectives from the Dependent Child Unit responded to the complex in order to investigate the circumstances surrounding the locating of the infant. They learned that a newborn, Caucasian female was found inside of a duffle bag that was left outside of the manager’s apartment at the complex.
