  12. article Such the Spot: Healthy school lunches

    Tuesday, August 7, 2012 4:59 pm

Last week I was at Costco for my weekly grocery shopping trip.  Just as I was wrestling the last of my items - a ginormous honeydew melon - onto the conveyer belt for checkout, I heard the cashier question my purchases, “is all of that stuff for a birthday party?”  I looked up to find that he wasn’t actually talking to me.  The lady behind me had a cart full of convenience foods: Rice Krispy Treats, juice boxes and enough sugary fruit snacks to send a bear into hyperglycemic shock.

The scenario seems straight out a J.A. Jance mystery novel. A twenty-something wife waits at home for her oppressive, alcoholic husband, who eventually is dropped off at their home after a drinking binge. "Don't you worry about your wife being at home alone at night?" the driver, a stranger the husband meets at a bar, asks as the wayward spouse exits his car. "No," says the husband, "we have dogs." Days later, the police contacts the couple. That night's driver was a serial killer suspected in the murder of several women.

  17. article Such the Spot - Wisdom gained from the baseball stands

    Sunday, April 21, 2013 4:59 pm

My thirteen-year-old daughter is playing baseball on an organized, uniforms-make-it-official, team this year. It’s a first for her. She’s taking part in Challenger Baseball, a local league for children and young adults with physical and/or mental challenges. She knows the schedule by heart and—on game days—starts itching to get suited up right after breakfast. That in spite of the fact that her games don’t typically begin until 7:30 pm. Saying she enjoys playing is a bit of an understatement.
