Tucson veterans are sharing life lessons learned in service as part of a nationwide project spearheaded by Watermark Retirement Communities.

Cheers erupted throughout Golden Pin Lanes on Friday, Oct. 26, as high school students from the Coronado Area competed in bowling for the Special Olympics.

Governors, park rangers, cave experts, geologists, construction crews, bat biologists, legislators, and local leaders assisted in an 11-year effort to open Kartchner Caverns State Park.

A good-sized crowd braved the sun and heat on March 31 to support the athletes participating in the Coronado Area Track & Field competition held at Amphi High School. More than 480 Special Olympics athletes from Tucson and southern Arizona representing 20 area delegations came out to compete in the event.

The sun was setting, the Catalina Mountains were aglow, and Floyd the spitting llama was safely tied up against the fence. The three angel girls were spotlighted atop the hill.

Special Olympics Arizona has an extra $20,000 to help fund its efforts thanks to fundraising conducted by a number of Catalina groups and businesses.

Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords made a public appearance on behalf of Democratic Congressional District 8 candidate Ron Barber on Saturday at the Rialto Theater. The duo, along with Giffords’ husband Mark Kelly, promoted a “Get Out the Vote” concert, which featured Kevin Pakulis, Salvador Duran, Sergio Mendoza y La Orkest, and special appearances from Joey Burns and Jacob Valenzuela of the band Calexico.

"Maxstravaganza" was developed by friends and family as a fundraiser and fun event to help support five-year-old Max, who is battling brain cancer.

The University of Arizona School of Music presents a recital featuring Mexico’s National Symphony principal flutist Julieta Cedillo, joined by faculty artists John Milbauer on piano and William Dietz on bassoon. The recital, co-sponsored by the Mexican Consulate in Tucson, will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 20 in Crowder Hall.

A Sept. 2 benefit for the Special Olympics will include the Marana, Oro Valley and Pima County police departments.
