Going back to its roots, the Town of Oro Valley celebrated Settler’s Day over the weekend.

In a 5-2 vote, Oro Valley Town Council enacted an ordinance on Wednesday that will allow the sale and consumption of alcohol at Steam Pump Ranch for special events.

In a town revered for its forward thinking, Oro Valley isn’t forgetting to take a look back at history as it celebrates Settler’s Day on April 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Town of Oro Valley is proud to announce the guest speakers for the February 9 event at Steam Pump Ranch. Barbara McIntire and Nancy Cobb, the great, great granddaughters of George and Matilda Pusch, will give a special presentation at 12:30 p.m., including items that Geroge and Matilda Pusch traded with Native Americans in exchange for flour and sugar.

After a successful trial-run of free, guided tours at Steam Pump Ranch in November and December 2012, the Town of Oro Valley has decided to continue and expand this community program into 2013.

Two chambers of commerce in the Northwest — Marana Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce — are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year, not by reveling in past, but by looking toward what they might accomplish in the future.

When it comes to delivering an address, and stressing that the State of the Town of Oro Valley is strong, no one does it better than Mayor Satish Hiremath.  One might say it’s in his nature.

Following some initial phases and testing, the Town of Oro Valley has implemented a yearlong Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the Arizona Department of Corrections to form an inmate labor program to be called the Community Betterment Program.

After serving eight years on the Oro Valley Town Council, Councilman Barry Gillaspie is saying farewell to government. He is looking forward to concentrating on his personal life and career as the Director of Development Services for Information Technology at Pima Community College.  

While the Oro Valley Town Council voted unanimously to cease funding to the Oro Valley Recreation Room in a May 2 council meeting, the Town is in the process of creating partnerships to meet the needs of patrons currently utilizing the facility.

The Town of Oro Valley was recognized for its fourth consecutive annual budget award from the Government Finance Officer’s Association for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.   

Oro Valley residents had the opportunity to hear the perspectives of the six candidates running for Town Council when Sun City hosted a forum at the town’s Social Hall on Feb. 18.
