“Clean coal” is a fantasy created by mining and power companies to convince us we can keep burning coal forever without harming ourselves, or the environment. The truth is, coal is dirty, harmful stuff. In the short term, we need to install scrubbers to catch coal’s noxious emissions before they make their way out of the smokestack. In the long term, we need to phase out coal-powered energy sources and replace them with cleaner alternatives.

• Apologies to the Scots for my recent comments. My oldest
daughter's mother-in-law hails from the Isle of Skye and notes the
"compassionate release" of the Lockerbie bomber was just the cover
story as admitted by the shabby leaders of the current Brit
government. Local Scot officials were used by their English owners
to facilitate an oil deal with Libya.

I know this is no time to suggest adding another layer to local
governments when revenue sources are drying up, but I’m going to do
it anyway. I suggest we create a county-wide, intergovernmental
agency called The Department of Free Stuff.

My neighbor and I were visiting a few days ago about how much
stuff he had in his garage. There were sagging shelves and bulging
doors in every direction. He told me he'd been a "collector" since
his childhood. He knew almost exactly where to find anything he, or
anyone else, might need.
