“Heartbreaking” was the word described by Marana softball coach George Corona as his Tigers were eliminated from the state playoffs at the hands of the Desert Ridge Jaguars on April 30. 

As softball playoffs approach, a similar picture is emerging from last year as Canyon Del Oro and Ironwood Ridge High School continue to compete for the top spot in Division II play.

If there’s one thing we know about this year’s Masters Tournament, it’s that anything was possible. From Tianlang Guan at age 14 becoming the youngest player in tournament history making the cut, to Tiger Woods being penalized, and to Adam Scott becoming the first Australian to ever win the Masters, this year’s tournament truly had something for everyone.

Winning the Cowboy up Baseball Invitational earlier in the year, and defeating rival Canyon Del Oro, 18-6, seemed like good building blocks for the Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks baseball team (8-2) in their quest to go deep into the 2013 playoffs.

Remember how Director Todd Phillips just half-heartedly remade “The Hangover” in “The Hangover Part II?” Remember how lethargic, lame, and tedious it felt having to sit through the same movie over again with fewer laughs? That’s the best way to describe “21 and Over.” The film marks the directorial debut of Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the writing team behind the original “Hangover.” They’ve basically recycled their smash hit comedy beat for beat. Where “The Hangover Part II” at least had three laugh-out-loud moments though, there’s nothing even remotely funny in “21 and Over.” It’s a comedic dead zone from its opening scene all the way through.

After rainwashed out last Wednesday’s scheduled play of the Dorado Softball Classic at Mark Jacobs Sports Park, the Marana Tigers had to wait until Thursday to play. 

There were a few upsets during the opening round, including both first- and second-ranked PGA players Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods.

On Feb. 24, the long awaited Super Bowl of the movie season will be held as the Oscar’s will be hosted on ABC. This year’s Oscars have plenty of intrigue with some obvious snubs, but overall plenty of deserving nominations that should make for a competitive night.

From today until Sunday, the top golfers in the world will be competing for the Walter Hagan Cup at the World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championships, in Marana at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain. The top golfer in the world, Rory McIlroy, will be playing, along with Tiger Woods, Luke Donald, and last year’s returning champion Hunter Mahan. On Tuesday, Tiger Woods announced he will play in the 64-player Accenture Match Play Championship, to be held at Dove Mountain's Ritz-Carlton Golf Club on Feb. 20-24. Woods is returning from a 17th-place finish last year.

It’s proving to be quite the year for Ironwood Ridge.

A 50-cent set of plastic golf clubs and a couple of swings from a little girl is all it took for Carl and Avivi Pearson to realize that their daughter, Hannah, was no ordinary 1-year-old.

Marana has struggled all season to find a go-to-scorer to replace superstar Jamee Swan, who graduated in 2012, going on to Colorado University.
